My 20 Favorite Facebook Quotes from 2012

My favorites are not Facebook’s favorites.

Facebook gathers information about all of us as we use it. What we like, comment on and share is all collected in a database and analyzed by advertisers. BOOK Cover Facebook Logo

As this year comes to a close, the collections are being shared. Facebook will share some of what they gathered about you and what their formula has concluded to be your “20 Biggest Moments”. Go to your Facebook home page and check it out. Do you agree with what they came up with?

Yesterday, I watched as Katie Couric hosted an episode of Katie where these “biggest” stories were discussed. The stories that had the most shares, likes and which were mentioned the most. Then today, on Facebook, I read a quote from claypotideas that let me see all this information with a new perspective;

“What people think about you is none of your business.”

So much of our time is wasted worrying about what others think about us. Facebook’s “20 Biggest Moments” feature is reinforcing this destructive behavior by selecting out only the stuff that your friends have liked, shared and commented on.

Define Yourself

Young children, on the other hand, like, share and comment on everything that is emotionally important to them. Kids feel everything and will most likely tell you all about it. “My neck is itchy”, “I have to go pee”, “I have balls in this box” etc. The examples go on and on. In my book Heart of a Toddler: The Zen in Them this is :

Lesson 25: If you see value in it, share it.

The key word above is “you“. If you see value in it. So, I test out this theory of the importance of personal value.

I ask my preschooler, “If you think back about this entire year, what do you remember the most?”

“You!” He says quickly, pointing at me with his entire arm.

I know that’s not an answer that would score high up on the Facebook charts, but it’s one that scores high up on mine. For while it will calm our hearts to free ourselves from what others think, it can also empower and inspire us. Even negative comments have something to teach us, as long as we can manage not to let them hurt us or be roadblocks to our growth. It’s all about our perspective and how we choose to take it.

I’ve gained a lot of insight and inspiration from quotes that have come to me through Facebook and which I have shared there. Facebook didn’t however and most aren’t accessible from there anymore.  I see defining value in them however, so I have dug through some of my favorite pages and here I am sharing these quotes with you. Searching for the Source

Having to explain the products, foods and material possessions you have or don’t have in your house to a 3 year-old is a challenging prospect.

A torrent of information came my way this week: metal flakes in breakfast cereal, coal tar in food coloring, labor conditions in China that are so bad the factory had to put up nets to help catch all the people that were trying to kill themselves by jumping off the building. How do I explain all of this to someone who just wants a box of Apple Jax?

The worst part is that as my knowledge of such things is constantly growing and changing, what was once acceptable may not be any longer, and visa versa: what I once said “no” to, I then change to a “yes”.

Buying and consuming is so complicated a prospect I don’t even realize why I buy the things that I do a lot of the time. I am fasinated by advertising tactics, sense perception and the magic act that is being perpetrated right before me in the form of a completely incoherent product label when I do take the opportunity to actually read what it is that is actually inside whatever product I happen to be ingesting at that moment.

Learning more creates a higher appreciation and a change in buying habits. Ever since I learned that gelatin is made from cow toenails (really, Mr. Knox got the idea for Knox gelatin after watching his wife boil down hooves to make it at home), I haven’t been able to eat Jello. That doesn’t mean that no one should, I just can’t.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that I found out from reading The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight by Thom Hartmann that oil comes from vegetation that lived 300 million years ago. Thinking about stuff like that makes me drive a little less. I wonder, do I really need to use up some gas, dip into the earth’s piggy bank, into a stash that has been 300 million years in the making just to run to the store because I have a craving for some potato chips?

Plus, once I get there, the ability to enjoy those chips comes with the heavy burden of all the gas that was used in their production and transportation, energy that has gone into their conception and marketing combining with the added realization that they will probably also contribute to a whole slew of health problems from obesity to heart attack.

Thinking about all of this is staying concious to what materialism is and means. The less I consume, the less I have to think about all of those things. The more I know about everything that I purchase, the easier I’m able to sleep.

How Do I Drink Zen?

This week I both introduced Adam to caffeinated soda and then proceeded to take it away.

Sometimes just deciding what to drink can completely frazzle me. Does this soda have too much sugar? Is this beer going to make me bloated? If I drink water should it be filtered? unfiltered? bottled? with minerals added for flavor? is it advertised as being from a “mountain spring” but is actually from a city water supply? is that so bad? Will the bottle pollute the environment? Should I just boycott buying beverages entirely? What about those poor folks in Africa that have their water spigots chained by these same soda and water companies unless they pay for access and if they can’t pay they have to haul water from muddy, disease-ridden puddles miles away on their heads?!?

It really can be hard to enjoy a drink nowadays. Now add-on top of that the burden of responsibility to make sure you are modeling responsible behavior to your children and it can be simply overwhelming.

I gave up all caffeine while I was pregnant, which is a main ingredient in my favorite drinks: coffee, tea, and soda. Real coffee came back first. I said that decaffeinated stuff was fine while I was pregnant but it is really hard to find it in a good hazelnut and a warm, creamy cup of hazelnut really tastes divine to me.

Dr. Pepper is my favorite soda. That and Classic Coke. Man, that stuff is good! Adam has been indulging once in a while in seltzers and gingerales for about 6 months now. (I never thought I’d be letting him drink soda at 2 1/2 years old, but he really does enjoy it so I say “yes” every now and then.)

My real mistake came with that red and white can. My two-year-old cannot handle his caffeine! Maybe if he had been fed it intravenously through the fetal juices right from the onset….

Caffeine literally makes him bounce off the walls. It’s like he’s got a rocket attached to him that forces him to just throw his body around in the craziest of ways. It took me a couple of days to figure out that it was the soda. At first I thought he was just testing me.

He’s now back on the gingerale. As for me, I just drink whatever will leave me with the smallest amount of American guilt.

Snow Day

Adam’s too young yet for school, but you’re never too young, or too old, for a snow day! After coming in from playing in the fluffy white stuff, hunger strikes. What to make for second breakfast?

Snow-topped French Toast

Usually got some french toast fixin’s in the house. Sliced up thick some yummy bread, let Adam dip and swirl it around in the cinnamon, nutmeg batter and plopped ’em in the pan.

While I cleaned up the egg he’d brokenas it ran down the cupboard door, Adam climbed up into his booster seat. He swung his freshly-socked feet while eying our creation with anticipation and munching on some pineapple.

I topped the toasted bread with some seared pears, more pineapple, some flaked coconut and a drizzle of local maple syrup.

Adam finished off two slices. This Snow-topped French Toast was just the mid-morning meal to boost  our energy on this most glorious holiday; the snow day!

Adventures in Breaded Asparagus Land

 
Asparagus is especially tricky in toddler land. It’s more bitter than a green bean, softer than celery and sometimes has a weird, thin, skin.
 
Not an easy sell.
 
Breading it made it go down; a couple of bites, at least, and with asparagus, those bites are beautious victorious.  Cutting it up small and hiding it in pasta or eggs works better.

Another super kid-friendly soup recipe. Adam had 2 bowls for lunch and then insisted on 3 more bowls full for dinner!

Lick the Bowl Clean Sweet Red Pepper Soup
12-ounce jar of roasted red sweet peppers packed with garlic clove
1 can chicken broth (2 cups)
3 Tablespoons tomato paste
basil
honey
salt & pepper
Drain peppers & puree in blender. Heat puree, chicken broth, and tomato paste about 5 minutes. Season with basil, a dollop of honey, salt & pepper to taste. Enjoy.
To make it even more enjoyable for the adults, next time going to use it to mix up some bloody mary’s. Yum.

Kid-friendly Peanut Pumpkin Soup

Here is the first of my postings on healthy recipes that I make at home and how they go over.

This peanut pumpkin soup recipe from parents.com was labelled “kid-friendly” and once we tried it I could see what that meant. Adam drank it from the bowl and asked for more. Twice. Served for lunch and he wanted more for dinner that same night.

A unique blend for a soup. A sweet side dish that’s super easy. A winner!

Pumpkin-Peanut Butter Soup

Cook 1/2 cup chopped onion in 1 tablespoon hot olive oil on medium for 4 minutes, or until tender. Stir in a 15-ounce can pumpkin puree, 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth, 1 cup water, 1/4 cup peanut butter, 1/4 teaspoon curry powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; heat through. Swirl plain yogurt on top of each bowl.

With Hot Dog in Hand

Odd how so many people agree with thier mouths that healthy food is important while holding hot dogs in their hands. The funny thing is, they point out their unhealthy eating and laugh. “See what I’m eating?” they say. What am I to do with this?

Give them something else to put in their hand.
